The Bursary Project/DUSSPRO

The Distance University Student Support Programme was SACHED’s first project. DUSSPRO was initially called the Bursary Project. This was run through Britzius Tutorial College in Johannesburg and allowed students to obtain degrees such as BA and BSc from London University. Notable students include President Thabo Mbeki. In 1970 it was decided that the project would join forces with UNISA, this was in part due to the issues with the London model. This UNISA model would then provide students with a local alternative.

Gareth Coleman’s 1989 MA thesis is a thorough history of SACHED’s work and key turning points from its inception up until 1987. Read about the first project and the turn to UNISA below!
